Sofas Made From Unusual Materials

If you are considering buying a new sofa for your living room maybe you are thinking about a traditional design in soft leather, corduroy or linen fabric? Well how about getting something a little more unusual? You may be surprised to hear that sofas can be made from just about anything!

Some designs are really very unusual. Harrods, the well-known London store, had a sofa on display made totally from stuffed animals such as teddy bears, ducks and lambs. It might not be very comfortable, but it would certainly be very eye-catching and would make a great talking point.

The “east meets west” sofa designed by Tonio de Roover, is made from an Persian carpet attached to a wood and metal support frame. It looks just like a flying carpet that is about to take off. It is stunning in its simplicity and would make a very striking addition to a modern room, being as much a sculpture as a piece of furniture.

The Italian designer, Zac, has made a sofa made from car tyres. The inside of the tyres is filled with a stripy fur material. It is a very male orientated design and would look great in a bachelor pad. Also guaranteed to please the men is the Aston Martin DB6 sofa. It is shaped like the back seat of a DB6 Aston Martin and has beautiful leather upholstery. It gives you the chance to sit in an Aston Martin even if you cannot afford to buy the whole car. It isn’t cheap though and if you manage to find one for sale it will still cost you a small fortune.

A design student from BCUC (Buckingham New University) was inspired to dream up a sofa that looks like a giant toothbrush or scrubbing brush. The long foam bristles actually give you a relaxing massage and the unusual design would probably appeal to teenagers.

If that one doesn’t appeal to you then how about the sofa designed by Animi Causa. It is made from 120 soft balls covered with an elastic fabric that enables you to be creative and change the shape if you wish.

Sand sculptors have made a huge model of sofa on the beach. I doubt that it would be very comfortable and certainly not very practical for the living room.

How about the sofa made out of grass? It would be lovely and soft to sit on and would be environmentally friendly. However you will have to water and mow it! Sofas have also been sculptured out of snow and ice. They would not be very long lasting and would be rather chilly and slippery to sit on!

An advert for Sony’s satellite TV channel shows a sofa made entirely from trays of eggs boxes filled with real eggs. Sitting on eggshells would certainly make a change from walking on them! Sofas have also been made from computers, mouse pads and even baths!

We have seen that sofas can be made of a huge range of weird and wonderful materials. The only limit appears to be the imagination and ingenuity of the designer.
